Government misprint sends hunters out for tail
Heather-Ann Schaeffner The Corner News published September 5, 2008 Duck stamps, which cost about $15 a piece, are required by law in order to hunt migratory fowl. The federal goverment uses the revenues from the sale of these stamps, about $22 million annually, to fund the National Wildlife Refuge System. This years stamps went on sale on June 15 and feature a misprint. Corrected stamps will not be available until next year. The government’s Fish and Wildlife Services division printed about 3.5 million duck stamps attached to cards bearing what should have been the number to reach the government about these stamps. That number is 1-800-782-6724, or 1-800-STAMPS-24. A misprint lead to the cards reading 1-800-872-6724, a number owned by 1-800-TRAMPS-24. Callers to the number given on the card are greeted by a husky female voice offering for you to “talk to all the girls that turn you on” for just $1.99 a minute. The government has stated that it would cost about $300,000 to reprint the cards and so they are not going to. |
