Ah, diversity!
Heather-Ann Schaeffner The Corner News published November 9, 2008 People are intrinsically ethnocentric. We are naturally inhibited by our own experiences so that which is alien is most often regarded negatively when first encountered. I often express that we, as Americans, can not fathom daily life in a foreign country. Example - The Swedish Association on Sexual Education publishes a monthly magazine entitled Ottar. This month they are causing quite a stir because of an article which stated that prosthetic non-functioning penises will be distributed to woman seeking to become transsexual men for free. This move is an effort to foster equality based on the fact that in Sweden wigs, breast implants and hair removal operations are all public funded and available free to men going through the process toward being transsexual women. When questioned as to why they would be making such a half-masted attempt, the doctors scoffed. They argue that publicly funded, read free, fully-functioning penises should be supplied, but state that a law prohibiting them from using taxpayer money for products or procedures that are considered sexual aids. So in summary, in Sweden the government will buy you breast implants in you want to become a lady, but it will not provide you with prescription coverage for your Viagra! |
