Jam-band enthusiasts are notorious for touring the country, hopping from lot to lot, just to catch the next great set from their favorite band.

Unfortunately, this lifestyle is not on option for everyone, especially college students. Fortunately for Auburn students and residents who aren’t currently selling veggie quesadillas in a Phish or Widespread lot, there is Senate Horse.

Senate Horse plays classic rock ‘n’ roll type jams full of modern and classic jam influences. The interplay between Alex Ruth on guitar and Blake Catrair on keys literally screams of the song, “Stash” by Phish.

On other songs such as, “VI,” Ruth’s guitar playing contains hints of Carlos Santana’s mellow, riff-style of playing.

All of these examples of Senate Horse’s influences are not to say that their sound is generic or a rip-off of any band. Senate Horse keeps the listener engaged during their songs with an ability to build off of one another in their constant search for the perfect jam. At any given point during a song, one member may take the lead or sit back and let someone else steer the direction of the song. Members often loop their own material or work with someone else to create something totally new out of the jam they are working in. This coalesence of sound is apparent throughout the band’s “Improvised Roman Numeral Production” which is, as the name indicates, an album that was completely unscripted before the “record” button was pushed.
