Creativity played fun covers at SkyBar Saturday night.
Last Saturday SkyBar was not very crowded, and except for a few bold and likely drunk girls, the dance floor was empty. The band Creativity came on the stage at midnight, and with magnetic force gradually drew a small crowd. People began to dance. Others just stood and cheered. And something that is often rare for a cover band, many people just sat down or stood by the stage, and listened to the music.
Creativity covers a combination of pop and R&B from the last five years or so. Their instrumentals have a funky, jazz influenced flavor, and the two female lead vocalists add a soulful twist to the lyrics of today’s pop stars.
The band opened with Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” and the audience was impressed with their added synchronized moves. Creativity added an interesting twist to the chart topping hits that many of the attendees of SkyBar knew and could sing along to.
As the show progressed, the dance floor flooded with the dwindling crowd at SkyBar that evening, and the level of dancing increased. Because Creativity was a fairly innovative act, a combination of pop hits, original vocals, instrumental additions and especially some very original dance moves, people weren't sure how to react. Some stood by the stage and cheered, others watched from the back. There was of course the usual bump and grind, and a few couples busted out some impressive swing moves. Especially for a band covering the most played songs in bars across America, creativity certainly lived up to their name.
Serious music aficionados would probably not be impressed with a band that covers Rihanna, but Creativity was perfect for SkyBar. Overall, they gave a stellar performance.
