Musical greatness missed by most

Why weren’t you guys at the Supper Club last Sunday night reveling in the bluesy awesomeness of music Hall of Famer Billy Earl McClelland and his band, Mojo:Saint!? I’ll go ahead and blame it on the back-to-school rush since we’re all such academics here in Auburn.

Still, I’m a little disappointed. Only a handful of people showed up to see power trio Mojo:Saint, but the group played like they had a packed house and the energy they were kicking off was electric. The small crowd didn’t seem to bother the guys that much, as they jokingly called it their “private audience,” and took the opportunity to work on some songs that they thought needed some live practice. Naturally, in between songs the guys slowed down a bit. After all, the youngest one in the group is the 50-year-old drummer, Dave Brazeal who made a few gripes from behind his drum kit about getting the AARP magazine.

For those who haven’t heard Mojo:Saint, you’re missing out. Leader of the gang, Billy Earl McClelland is in the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and has made a career as a session player on countless albums and as a songwriter who has had his songs recorded by some prolific country artists such as Waylon Jennings, Delbert McClinton and Hank Williams Jr. Bassist Jack Hall punched his ticket as a member of the formative Southern rock group, Wet Willie.

The fellas opened their last set with a cover of “Statesboro Blues,” which would have made Duane Allman blush, then plowed their way through about five more blues numbers before they called it quits a little after midnight.

User Comments:

No one showed up because Mojo:Saint is not an 80’s cover band. Auburn’s music scene is dead because the local’s and students don’t support local music unless it involves spandex, Motley Crue cover songs, and cheesy on stage gimmicks. What happened to the Auburn music scene?
