The “MTV Video Music Awards Tour 2008” hit Six Flags of Atlanta Sunday. On that scorching hot day the Southern Star Amphitheatre hosted performances by Boys Like Girls and Metro Station.
When it comes to being able to see a great band live, dedicated fans are more than willing to deal with the heat. Concert go-ers made their way to the outdoor amphitheatre way ahead of the shows’ start time to ensure a great seat as close to the stage as possible.
The show kicked off at 6 p.m. with entertainment from the emcee, Sunny. He got the crowd excited for the performances and kept the energy going during set changes. First up was a performance by Classic Addict, hailing from Atlanta. Their sound was great and fans really enjoyed their set.
After a quick set change, Metro Station took the stage and gave an outstanding, performance of songs from their self-titled debut album. For those who do not know, Metro Station is a pop/electronica band known for their infectious tunes such as “Shake It” and “Control.” The band is vocalists/guitarists Mason Musso and Trace Cyrus, drummer Anthony Improgo and beat maker/bassist Blake Healy. Their rise in popularity is absolutely well deserved. Check them out at myspace.com/metrostation.
At that point the show could only get better and the anticipation of a performance from Boys Like Girls, guaranteed an amazing show. The band took the stage to the sound of screaming fans. The band, Martin Johnson (lead vocals, guitar), Paul DiGiovanni (lead guitar/vocals), Bryan Donahue (bass/vocals) and John Keefe (drums), wasted no time rocking out. The show was fantastic. The band performed most of the songs off their self-titled album including all three hit singles, “The Great Escape,” “Hero/Heroine” and “Thunder.”
It was apparent that Boys Like Girls thoroughly enjoys performing live. The guys encouraged the crowd to have the best time by constantly singing along, dancing and jumping up and down. Fans also went crazy when Martin, Paul and Bryan threw guitar picks into the crowd, what a mad scramble for a highly regarded concert souvenir. At one point during the show a fan threw a shoe on stage with a sock and sharpie stuffed inside, with the hope of an autograph. Donahue took time to sign both items.
The show closed on a high note when Johnson stepped off the stage to get closer to the crowd.
Overall, the show was amazing and worth the price of admission into Six Flags. Roller coasters and amazing bands, talk about a perfect day at an amusement park. Boys Like Girls are pulling double tour duty with the MTV VMA tour and a headlining tour.
