Drew and Ellie Holcomb offered a fun, playful performance at Eighth & Rail Wednesday night.
The Nashville-based band Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors offered a chill, relaxed atmosphere to a student-dominated crowd Wednesday night at Eighth and Rail.
The eponymous Drew Holcomb and wife Ellie were the only members to perform, but just because their Neighbors weren’t there doesn’t mean they didn’t put on an amazing show.
After the band Sons of Summer opened at 10 p.m., the husband and wife duo took the stage at about 11 p.m. Those in attendance were settled in comfortably amongst the booths and at the bar, taking in the music attentively.
They started off strong in perfect harmony; Drew kept the beat mid-tempo with precise strums and a smoky voice, while Ellie provided the background vocals with a haunting, lilting soprano. Their music may have been mellow, but their enthusiastic performance guaranteed that the night would be anything but dull.
About midway through the first set, Drew announced that he and Ellie recently celebrated their fifth year anniversary together. After a minute of playful banter about married life, Ellie got the opportunity to show off her full vocal range with a bluesy cover of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” that would have made the Queen of Soul proud.
Effortlessly switching from soft and silky to strong and rich within a matter of seconds, she belted out an impressive rendition that at times was part Dolly Parton, part Reba McEntire and part Alison Krauss.
Her performance was punctuated by Drew turning to the audience and dryly remarking, “I just wish that she could sing, you know?”
Throughout the rest of the evening, they enlightened the audience with funny stories about their previous touring experiences interspersed between songs.
Aside from the husband and wife duo, the Neighbors consist of guitarist Nathan Dugger, bassist Rich Brinsfield and drummer Jon Radford. Since 2006, the band has recorded and released three independent albums without a record label and has found a loyal fanbase throughout the Southeastern club scene.
