Mike Hart of Seven Story Fall rocking in Atlanta Saturday night.
Go up the stairs at the Masquerade in downtown Atlanta and “Heaven” awaits. No not THE heaven, it’s the name for the locale of awesome shows and it was the place to be last Saturday night. It really is called Heaven because it is upstairs (obviously) and downstairs is, well you get the idea. The line-up was a tribute to Atlanta with hometown bands Holiday Parade, Seven Story Fall, Freshmen 15 and The Media Says.
While talented bands have played shows both upstairs and downstairs, there is something about the upstairs that everyone frequently gravitates towards.
Hometown line-ups call for the big time. For the young men of Seven Story Fall (7SF), the journey to getting their music out there has been one for the books.
As a fan of 7SF, as well as Holiday Parade, the opportunity to see both bands share the stage was a must-see. Mike Hart (vocals), Ryan McManus (bass/vocals), Justin Calalay (guitar), TJ Routon (guitar) and Wes Moore (drums) are all about the music, the fans and making it big. No sign of lack of hard work here, these guys are serious, but they definitely know how to have fun.
When asked, Mike and Wes couldn’t think of an alternative career. So far, they are on the right track with a successful debut EP, “The Getaway”, and driving around in their van, a.k.a “The Maroon Moose” to play shows, big or small. The music of 7SF is loud, fast and catchy.
When it came time for Seven Story Fall to take the stage, eager fans could barely take the anticipation. No time was wasted as 7SF jumped right into performing. The band/audience chemistry was on a high throughout the set as “The Getaway” was played in its entirety as well as a couple of new songs.
The band has spent a lot of time writing new material for their next release, this time taking things differently.
“Lyrically, definitely not the same inspiration, this EP is more about enjoying life, not so dark at all,” says Hart.
Fans got a little taste of that with “Where You Want Me.” The guys also want to show they are multi-faceted, que up ‘Secrets Never Slip,’ an acoustic tune to back them up.
“We want to try and show people we aren’t all in your face, that we can still be smooth and sexy,” says Hart.
7SF plans to keep the song acoustic for record purposes, but rocked it out electric that night.
Another focus on the forefront, no longer solely focused on impressing others, now it is making the music that they want. 7SF is working on getting into the studio to record another EP, no full length just yet, solely due to budget constrictions.
“The point our band is at, we don’t really need a full length to get to the next level, just need some really good songs,” says Moore.
They already have a dozen or so new songs to pick from for the new EP. When it comes to song writing every band has a unique methodology.
“It’s individual ideas brought together and transformed into a cohesive 7SF sound,” says Hart.
The route of this idea comes from Routon, who uses ProTools to create base sounds, which Moore contributes to a more expedient and efficient music making process.
The choices they have been making so far has been working for them and they plan to keep it up. For now, another successful hometown show.
