Check out Romeo Spike at The Independent Saturday night.
When Mike Kunz of Chicago and Donn Aaron of Atlanta were introduced by a mutual friend it seemed an unlikely musical friendship had been sparked. The two had deep musical backgrounds, but the geographical distance made it difficult for the two to collaborate. But despite the hundreds of miles between the two, they quickly developed a highly creative working relationship.
Throughout 2006 the two emailed songs to one another. Ultimately, Kunz caved and moved to Atlanta in 2006 and what would become Romeo Spike became a full-time project. After finding a few likeminded musicians, Kunz and Aaron began recording highly polished pieces of DIY rock, which quickly won them local praise.
With a sound that bridges infuses modern, electronic instrumentation with the styles and influences of psychedelic classic rock, Romeo Spike has created a fresh blending of tunes with cross-genre appeal.
Named after the Southern balcony ornaments that kept young “Romeos” from climbing to meet their “Juliets” in olden days, the sounds of the modern Romeo Spike can be sassy and brash, just like one of these Romeos. But the guys also have the ability to pull off tunes with the gentle, desperation of young lovers hell-bent on being together, no matter the cost.
The group recently polished up their debut album, “For The Cause,” which has been receiving rave reviews in the Southeast. The album, produced by frequent Elton John collaborator/ producer Matt Still, is an atmospheric collection of engaging songs.
Romeo Spike will be playing The Independent this Saturday, Sept. 25.
