Lucky Town kept the energy high at SkyBar Friday night with covers that ranged from funk to rock.
After taking the stage at SkyBar about 11:45 pm Friday night, Lucky Town, an Auburn based, five-piece cover band, kept the party rolling fluidly.
Playing solid covers of hit songs like “The Joker” by the Steve Miller Band, Lucky Town felt right in place on the back stage of SkyBar.
Taking lead vocals in turns, the duo of beautiful Donica Knight and the rock style of Derek Jackson kept the energy level high all night with inspired vocals and plenty of movement.
Crowd interaction was in no short supply for the lead singers, either, regularly talking to the audience and even borrowing a camera from the crowd for a few pictures of the band from the stage.
Clad in orange Dickie’s and a bowler hat, guitarist Jeff King played the night flawlessly, playing with an individual sound that shone through the covers every now and then.
Drummer Josh Brewer and bassist Ben Owens held the beat together on the wide variety of covers, showing they can keep up with Knight and Jackson’s pace.
The crowd was definitely feeling Lucky Town, hands in the air, and hardly a still person in the room, thanks to their array of crowd favorites like The Darkness’ “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” and Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel.”
While Lucky Town played a variety of genres, from country to funk, they played them well, and didn’t disappoint with song choice, except for a slow country tune that seemed out of place among “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Play That Funky Music.”
While the song choice was a little on the safe side, there was no lack of execution or enthusiasm from the band, who played Violent Femme’s “Blister in the Sun” like they wrote it themselves.
They may not be nominated for a Grammy anytime soon, but if you’re looking for a band that can keep the mood up and the party churning, the safe bet is on Lucky Town.
Audience Reaction:

“Great band, great music!” Ashley Stephens

“I love them!” Susie Pettigrew

“Lucky Town is freakin’ awesome!” Lindsey Gillen
