Tim Reynolds and his band, TR3, recently released their new album, “From Space and Beyond.”
You're probably most familiar with Tim Reynolds in his role as Dave Matthews' guitarist, working with him in his band as well as doing numerous gigs with him in duo form since the mid-‘90s. In addition, Reynolds fronts his own trio, Tim Reynolds TR3, and performs solo in packed out venues around the world.
TR3 was a band that Reynolds formed early in his career, disbanded it to work with Matthews, and after relocating to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 2007, reformed it after meeting bassist Mick Vaughn and drummer Dan Martier. In 2009, they released “Radiance,” their first album as TR3, to great critical acclaim. Now the band has released a 2-CD live set titled “From Space and Beyond,” and it is sure to please not only Reynolds' fans, but bring many more people into Reynolds' world of amazing guitar and remarkable compositional style.
Recorded in November 2009 at locations in Illinois, Pennsylvania and Maryland, the set boasts 22 songs, most of which are Reynolds’ originals. The five covers chosen to grace the set are indicative of the many styles within the rest of the album: King Crimson's delicate “Matte Kudasai,” James Brown's funky “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine),” Focus' classic instrumental yodeler “Hocus Pocus,” and Led Zeppelin's “Whole Lotta Love” and “How Many More Times” bookending the second CD.
Beyond the diversity of styles within the set, it is Reynolds' guitar prowess that is showcased song after song. His extraordinary technique and startling musicality will, time and time again, leave the listener astounded, electrified, dazzled and overwhelmed. Tim Reynolds is, without a doubt, one of the finest and most unique guitarists in the world, and this album sets that in stone.
