When your first band practices take place in a fraternity house, it’s easy to get loud and rowdy. The guys from Tuscaloosa’s Druid City Band did just that.

The group draws its lineage back to the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity house at the University of Alabama, where the guys were attending school. Originally formed as an acoustic group consisting of Caleb Samples on guitar and vocals and Teddy Williams on piano, the group has gone through several stages with a revolving membership. The group’s one Auburnite, Matt Kooken, joined the group on lead guitar and background vocals last year and is now part of the two-guitar attack. Along with the guitars and keys, the group currently features Chase Childress on the drums and Nick Boyd on the sax.

Taking many of its musical cues from groups such as Kings of Leon, Widespread Panic and The Beatles, The Druid City Band has mastered versions of some regional fan favorites. And with a varied set list that includes cuts from groups like The Allman Brothers Band, Lil Wayne, The Dave Matthews Band,The Rolling Stones and many more, the group has a little something for everyone.

And while much of their material hovers around what might essentially be considered jam music, the group throws a healthy dose of rock and hip-hop into the mix to create an accessible sound.

Currently, the group plays mostly local bars around the Tuscaloosa area, but they have also dabbled in weddings and graduation parties.
