N.E.D. Is a unique rock band formed by six musically talented gynecologic cancer surgeons with an extreme mission. They are full time, practicing surgeons, researchers and professors who banded together to record and release an inspiring CD of all original music to raise money and awareness to fight the “silent killer”: women’s reproductive cancers.

The band is named for the sweetest words a cancer patient can hear: “No Evidence of Disease.” The album is produced by Mario McNulty (David Bowie, Linkin Park, Ziggy Marley) and with New York City-based singer/songwriter KJ Denhert.

The lyrics offer a fresh and sympathetic approach to love and the life and death issues that women with cancer and their families face every day. The doctors hail from all over the US: New York City, Raleigh N.C., Amarillo, Texas, and Portland Org.

The CD and companion book promote “Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month” (September) and the “Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Movement,” and net proceeds from the sale of the CD go to education, treatment and research in relation to cancers of women’s reproductive systems.

The music ranges from sweet pop tunes to blazing rockers, and there is no doubt that these doctors are fine musicians and excellent songwriters. The EP contains six songs, each of which have a different feel and style, but are nonetheless bound together with message and substance. In the liner notes, the band explains that they began as a cover band to entertain fellow physicians at medical conferences, but over time have become the voice of a movement, a belief that communication through music can heal as well as entertain and can educate the world about this unspoken killer.

The CD also contains a booklet titled “What Every Woman Should Know,” which describes symptoms and treatment for these cancers, and an insert that makes it easy to donate to their foundation, The “Gynecologic Cancer Foundation,” TheGCF.org. This album is worth buying for the music, but even more compelling knowing the story and cause behind it.
