“Anywhere I Lay My Head”

Scarlett Johansson “Anywhere I Lay My Head”
Standouts - “Anywhere I Lay My Head,” “I Wish I Was in New Orleans,” “Fannin Street”

Hollywood starlet Scarlett Johansson’s recording debut seems straight out of left field - an album of heavily personalized Tom Waits covers (plus one original). And while the concept may seem a little strange, the album shouldn’t be totally unexpected. The star has provided vocals for Jesus and Mary Chain and made her love and knowledge of music well known.
With “Anywhere I Lay My Head,” Johansson has crafted a selection of Waits’ song in her deep, drone-like alto, that aren’t half bad.Though her take on a few, such as “I Don’t Want to Grow Up,” seems sinfully misinterpreted.
