Ziggy Bloodlust of Auburn’s Burn City Rollers before the “Spread the Love” bout.
Normally when Auburn’s Burn City Rollers meet Birmingham’s Tragic City Rollers on the rink it’s to do battle against each another. Not last weekend.
Saturday in Phenix City the teams teamed up with the Dixie Derby Girls from Huntsville and the Chattanooga Roller Girls for a charity exhibition to thrash cervical cancer.
Members from each city’s team were divided into the black and blue teams. The blue team rolled away with the victory with a final score of 116-108.
The exhibition raised about $400 for “Spread the Love,” a non-profit organization that promotes awareness of cervical cancer and helps victims of the disease.
The group was started to honor Stephanie “Danger S”, a member of the Tallahassee Roller Girls, as she fights cervical cancer.
“We had a really great turnout, better than ever before,” said Cho Cold, member of the Burn City Rollers. “It was a really great event and we were so thrilled to have so much help from the Dixie Derby Girls, the Tragic City Rollers and Chattanooga Roller Girls,” said Cho Cold, member of the Burn City Rollers.
The exhibition also marked the first time a roller derby was ever held in Phenix City. Around 250 people showed up to cheer on the girls.
Saintly Vicious of the Burn City Rollers was excited to see the other girls from out of town. She hoped the exhibition match would draw new members.
Saintly Vicious offered a few words of caution to prospective members: “It’s not fake! Those girls are actually getting hurt and actually getting hit.”
