Check out the AU Players’ performance of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at SkyBar next week.
The AU Players will showcase their annual performance of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at SkyBar next week.
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is a musical production based on the 1975 British musical comedy film about a newly engaged couple who discover an Annual Transylvanian Convention after getting a flat tire one night.
Director Heather Rule, who is directing for the second time and playing the character of Columbia, said that the group usually tries to perform the show around Halloween, but with a lot of performance venues booked around that time that this month worked more in their favor.
The AU Players have been performing the show for years, and usually perform it at Auburn’s Telfair-Peet Theatre. But that venue didn’t work out this year.
“Their season was already too busy, and ‘Rocky’ just didn’t fit in on the schedule,” Rule said. “SkyBar has let us do it there in the past, and lucky for us the same owner is still there and he didn’t have a problem with us doing it at all. Plus, ‘Rocky’ is a show that’s kind of wild, one might say, so a bar type environment is much more suitable to do it in.”
The show will be performed in the back bar, which has plenty of standing room. The show will take place Monday, Jan. 25; Tuesday, Jan. 26; and Thursday, Jan. 28, at 10 p.m. each night. There will be a 15-minute pre-show before each performance. Admission is $10. Ages 19 and older may attend.
Rule said that she thinks people enjoy the show because it’s freaky.
“I think people like it because it’s viewed as a freak show, and it’s also very interactive with the audience,” Rule said. “I think the ridiculous nature of the show is what makes it so addictive to watch.”
