“Who I Am”

Standouts - “Rose Garden,” “Conspiracy Theory,” “State of Emergency”

As the youngest Jonas Brother and messianic tween-pop idol, a lot is expected of Nick Jonas. However, on his newest solo album Jonas aims for a funkier, more mature version of himself. Jonas’ backing band, who play under the decidedly un-rock ‘n’ roll moniker of “The Administration,” features a few members of Prince’s New Power Generation. And with some slinky, funky rhythms and Jonas’ 17-year-old falsetto, there are moments on “Who I Am” that sound as if they were “Purple Rain”-era b-sides – albeit less sexual b-sides. Still, the album is solid in its construction and sound in its scope.
