Three Auburn students have a goal to hug country music star Taylor Swift.
Three Auburn students have one goal: to get a hug from country music star Taylor Swift.
Michael Wekall came up with the idea one day while sitting in class.
“Since I love filmmaking and all, and I have always loved social media experiments, I decided that it was going to be my roommates and my turn to try something out,” Wekall said.
The fact that Swift is from Nashville was one reason that Wekall and his roommates decided to focus on her.
“I decided her because she is from Nashville and there are a lot of Nashville people here in Auburn, so there were potential leads,” Wekall said.
Wekall said that he heard Swift’s song “Teardrops on My Guitar” a few years ago and has been a fan ever since.
“I think that despite all the fame and celebrity that has followed her, she has somehow remained truly grounded, and that is something that is admirable in any celebrity,” he said. “And she seems like such a cool person to hang out with.”
Wekall’s roommate Ryan Leander said Swift’s sense of humor and reputation also appeal to him.
“I enjoy knowing Taylor has a good reputation and is classy in the way she dresses and acts and that she actually writes her songs too,” Leander said. “She has a great smile and just seems fun to be around.”
The guys decided a hug was the most they should ask for. After seeing the documentary “A Date With Drew Barrymore” they thought asking for a date would be too much and that a hug would be perfect.
Wekall said what really sealed the hug quest was a quote from Swift. She said: “I’ve always been a hugger … If we all hugged more, the world would be a better place.”
The guys created a Web site for their cause, ahugfromtaylorswift.com, and also a Facebook page that already has 1,600 members after only two weeks.
The guys said that since Nashville is close to Auburn that if Swift agrees to a hug they would head to meet her in Nashville on a moments notice.
Wekall added that he believes the chances of this actually happening are around 70 percent.
“We have had some friends help out in big ways, and as long as Taylor likes our idea, then it should happen,” he said. “So it's just a matter of getting the word to her.”
