Lady Tigers end losing ways
Justin Saia For The Corner News published January 28, 2008
Alabama’s Courtney Strauthers (22) shoots past Auburn’s Jordan Greenleaf (21). One day removed from the Auburn men’s blowout loss in Tuscaloosa, the Auburn women’s basketball team returned to Coleman Coliseum to restore dignity to the Auburn basketball program. Having lost five of its last six games, the Tigers were also in desperate need for a conference win against hated rival Alabama (8-12, 1-4). DeWanna Bonner responded from her miserable performance on Thursday against LSU in resounding fashion. Bonner had a monster game, recording 27 points, 6 steals, and 7 rebounds on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor and 8-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line. “I think she was trying to redeem herself a little bit for the last two games,“ Auburn coach Nell Fortner said. “She’s a great player. I thought she came out and really set a better tone today.“ Alabama led 27-24 at halftime, before relinquishing the lead to the Tigers, who were fueled by a 16-2 run to start the second-half. Sherell Hobbs added 17 points and 6 rebounds, as the No. 25 ranked Tigers defeated Alabama 62-48 for the fourth consecutive time and eighth time in nine games. Forward Jordan Greenleaf was superb on defense, as she recorded 6 blocks, 4 steals, and 7 rebounds. The Lady Tigers return to action at home Sunday against Mississippi State (13-7, 1-4) at 2:00 p.m. CT.
