Ladies continue to roll
Justin Saia For The Corner News published December 20, 2007
Auburn’s DeWanna Bonner (24) goes up for the shot during a college basketball game against Stephen F. Austin, Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Auburn concluded their 3-game tour of Texas as they punished Sam Houston State 80-36 and improved their overall record to 11-1. The Lady Tigers were paced by a 24 point dominating performance by superstar DeWanna Bonner, who only saw 21 minutes of playing time. She was 10-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the free throw stripe. Coach Nell Fortner pulled Bonner early and cleared her bench, allowing younger players to get valuable playing experience. The entire 11 player Auburn roster scored at least one basket on the night. Alli Smalley added 12 points and Sherell Hobbs paced the Auburn defense with 5 steals. The Tigers shot 58 percent from the field, while limiting Sam Houston State (1-10) to just 24 percent and forcing 29 turnovers. The women are back in action Dec. 28th and 29th as they travel to Philadelphia, PA to play in the St. Joseph’s Hawks Classic. Auburn opens first round play against Davidson (6-3), before playing in the consolation/championship game against either New Jersey Institute of Technology (1-7) or St. Joseph’s (5-5). Auburn already holds titles from the Buckeye Classic and Arizona State Classic earlier this season. Look for Auburn to be thoroughly tested in the opener versus Davidson. |
