Auburn Oyster Bar and Grill owner Justin Faulk isn’t above shucking oysters in his new restaurant.

Even if you are an oyster newbie like me, the Auburn Oyster Bar and Grill in the old Tiger’s Den location (corner of Donahue and S. College) will surprise you with fresh, sweet and salty oysters delivered five days a week from Apalachicola, Fla. I admit my trepidation at trying such a legendary creature - some consider it an aphrodisiac, some merely appreciate its fully balanced nutritional value (containing the perfect combo of protein, carbs and lipids), while others insist on believing the “R” myth - that you should only eat oysters in months ending with “R.” Fortunately, with today’s refrigeration standards and capabilities, one can enjoy oysters year round.
Justin Faulk purchased Tiger’s Den and converted it to the Auburn Oyster Bar in just two weeks, opening under the new name last Wednesday. He traveled the southeast visiting oyster bars for menu ideas, then created a menu with all of his favorites, such as the hand-battered fried crab claws appetizer for $8.95, and the classic Oysters Rockefeller (one dozen for $9.95).
Oyster experts in my group insisted that $8.95 for a dozen raw oysters on the half shell was a steal. Indeed, Justin said he doesn’t make money on the oysters, he sells them near cost and does plan to add a half-circle raw bar some time in the future. In the meantime, he offers patrons four classic oyster preparations, including raw, Rockefeller, and two different cheese bakes, in addition to upgraded entrees such as blackened or grilled grouper sandwiches, mahi mahi, an an oyster po boy. For dessert, one option is a Cheesecake Factory cheesecake. I can attest to the deliciousness of all of these - my group feasted well and left with grins and full bellies!
Appetizers range from standard fare, such as wings, fried dill pickles, and battered mushrooms, to the house special crab claws, sweet corn nuggets, and a crab and shrimp dip. For sports fans, the Auburn Oyster Bar and Grill has 27 TVs and one wall-sized screen that dominates the dining area. Monday through Friday Happy Hour runs from 4 to 7 p.m. and features $2.25 well drinks.
Bottom line on the newest addition to Auburn’s eateries: Two enthusiastic forks up! A fun atmosphere, a personable owner who is also a skilled shucker, and a high quality menu with reasonable prices.
