Auburn’s Blanche Alverson, pictued in a game against Kentucy earlier this season, scored a game-high 19 points for the Tigers in Thursday’s loss to Florida.
The Auburn Tigers women’s basketball team (11-14, 3-9 SEC) was no match for Florida (16-8, 6-5 SEC) in Gainseville, Fla., falling short to the Gators 70-56.
“Florida’s defense was really good tonight and took us out of a lot of things offensively,” said Auburn head coach Nell Fortner. “They shot the three-ball really well and that hurt us, too. It was just a tough night.”
The Tigers led most of the first half before the Gators went on a 9-2 run heading into the break. Florida then opened the second half with 10-0 to break the game open.
"That 10-0 run Florida got to start the second half really hurt," said Fortner. "We just could not overcome that."
Auburn junior forward Blanche Alverson led all scorers with 19 points, shooting three for five from the three-point range.
The Gators had three players in double figures, led by senior guard Lanita Bartley with 17 points.
Florida forced 22 Auburn turnovers, 13 in the second half, leading to 26 Gator points.
The Tigers hit the hardwood again on Sunday, Feb. 12, in the Auburn Arena to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks for the second time this year. In their first meeting, the Tigers lost 59-39 in Fayetteville, Ark. on Jan. 15.
Tip off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. with coverage on ESPN 2.
