Jeans:
Jeans are always a fashion staple, and the skinny jeans are still in style, but they are slowly making their way out.
“It will be a couple of years before it’s out here, but skinny jeans are going out,” said Village Boutique owner Erin Steele. “You didn’t see a lot of it on the runway.”
Adjective owner Robin Massey agreed.
“Wide legs are coming back in,” she said. “Skinny jeans are still in, but more the wide, boot-cut look is coming back around.
Resurrect, an antique store in Opelika, has begun carrying clothes and accessories and sales associate Kyndal Frazier, who is also an apparel and merchandising student at Auburn, said she feels like vintage style jeans are popular.
“I feel like I’ve seen a lot of ‘60s and ‘70s inspired jeans, like high wasted trouser,” she said.
Leggins are also still in this year, but the jegging look is more popular. Massey also added that colored jeans are in this year.
“Colored jeans are also in,” Massey said. “Red, purple, green … those are all really in.”
Tops:
Flowy, oversized and layering all seem to be in style for the fall and winter season.
“I think billowy, blouse-type shirts are going to be really in,” Frazier said. “I think layering is going to be really big this fall.”
Steele agreed.
“A lot of the styles aren’t very fitted this year, it’s more flowy,” she said.
Stacie Money, owner of Fringe, added that any type of embellishment is also in.
“Anything lacey, frilly, embellished of any sort is what is selling the quickest for us right now,” Money said. “Lots of lace, lots of pleating, lots of frill – tops, dresses, anything that has that going on is going to sell the quickest.”
Cowlnecks, the cold shoulder top, button-downs and sweater tops were also included in popular tops this year.
The most popular style of coat will still be the pea coat, and the most popular scarf is the infinity scarf.
Shoes:
Several types of shoes will be in style this year, but boots are at the top of the list.
“I feel like those are probably more in this fall then last year,” Frazier said.
She added that she believes riding boots with detailing like zippers and buckles are the most popular.
Hollie Brown, part-owner of Amour, agreed and said that the most popular colors are chestnut and camel.
Massey added that cowboy boots are still popular this year. Also mentioned were wedges, flats and clogs.
Purses:
The most popular style of purse seems to be the Crossbody bags.
“Crossbodies are still in and still convenient,” Steele said.
Massey agreed.
“The crossbody bags are really popular because a they’re easy and functional, but cute,” she said.
Money added that bright colors are still in.
“Bright colors that aren’t so matchy, matchy with the clothes and the shoes are in,” she said.
Jewelry:
Long, chunky, layered jewelry is the style in jewelry this year.
“Long layered is what we’ve seen a lot of,” Steele said.
Steele added the more vintage look is also in.
“It’s been a lot of muted … not bright silver, not bright gold, but antique silver, antique gold. Vintage looks are really big this year.”
Money agreed and added that animals on jewelry and pearls are also in.
“Pearls are selling really well,” she said. “With the fringe and the lace and all that kind of extra embellishment, people are looking for that in the jewelry as well.”
Hair:
Owner of RS1 Robb Todd said that the long layered cut is still the most popular style this year.
Sallon Barnes, stylist at Hairology, agreed.
“The long style has lots of layers,” she said. “Long hair is in right now, period.”
For short hair, Barnes said the inverted V is big this year.
“The short one that’s really coming back is the inverted V,” she said. “Not really stacked either, but just straight bob with the invert”
Todd said he’s seen a lot of the Asymmetrical look.
“Asymmetrical was really popular in the ‘80s and it’s made its return,” he said. “People are really getting into it again.”
Bangs are also still in style.
“Bangs are actually making more of a comeback than they have,” Todd said. “It’s still very much the side swept bang.”
With the cooler season come the darker hair colors.
“Really deep, rich browns and chocolate colors are the biggest craze out there,” Todd said.
Makeup and Nails:
Jana Gwin, owner of One Eighty Wellness Spa said smokey eyes are always in for night time events and shimmer is in for the holiday season.
“For the holiday season you see a lot of glitter and shimmer and sparkle,” Gwin said. “It’s certainly fun to dress up the eyes a little bit for a fun cocktail event. You can do a combination; like smokey with some shimmery in it.”
Gwin said the main key with makeup is to not overdo it.
“You just never want to do too much at one time,” she said. “If you’re going to do a heavy, smokey, dramatic eye you want to go a little more neutral on the lip. Or if you’re going to do a really crazy, shimmery lip color you maybe want to do more of a neural eye. The key is really just play up your favorite feature. If you love your eyes, play up your eyes and if you have great lips, play up your lips. Work on accentuating your best features and not overdoing it.”
Gwin said that the biggest nail style this year is having the ring finger painted a different color.
“The ring finger has a different design on it or just a different color than the other fingers,” she said. “It’s just nice to have just a little accent.”
She also added that glittery nail polish, crackle and matt finish are all popular.
“The matte finish on the polish is huge,” she said. “They’re coming out with the matte colors, but we actually have a matt top coat that we can turn any color into a matte finish.”
Athletic Gear:
During the cold weather, those exercising outside have to dress warmer and Big Dog Running Co. has the gear for the cooler season.
Manager Adam Pugh said athletic long sleeves and jackets become popular this time of year, but mostly gloves.
“The hands are the most important thing,” he said.
Employee Phillip Burks said minimal shoes are also the most popular running shoes at the moment.
“Trail shoes or really lightweight shoes are minimal,” he said.
Burks added that four brands are carrying the minimal shoes: Merrell, Vibram, New Balance and Brooks.
“Everyone is kinda gravitating to minimal shoes,” he said.
