Neiko Thorpe wins the “Seen It” award for tough physical coverage against South Carolina last week.
The Corner’s awards to outstanding players against South Carolina last week:
Mr. Everything
versatile player
One hundred fify eight yards passing and two touchdowns is a great day for most players. One hundred seventy six yards rushing and three touchdowns is a exceptional day for any runner. When you combine the two you get
Cameron Newton. Newton continues to torment defenses with his versatility and raw physical prowess as he leads the SEC in rushing and the Tigers in another thrilling come from behind victory..
Lean On Me
best blocking
Lee Ziemba played a great game Saturday as the offense rushed for 334 on the top SEC run defense. Ziemba displayed the strength and agility that makes him one of the top tackles in the country as a big contributor to the offensive line’s best performance of the season.
Mr. Momentum
game changing play
In a game where coaches preached physical play and hard work,
Demond Washington worked overtime. Washington returned three kickoffs for 76 yards, while playing a full game at cornerback. He recorded three tackles, a sack and an interception to seal the win. Washington’s performance Saturday showed how much he will do to help lift his teammates to a victory.
Show Stopper
defensive play
Nick Fairley got started early and often Saturday by making tackles for losses on the first two plays of the game. Fairley seemed un-blockable at times as he bulled his way through the South Carolina blockers and wreaked absolute havoc on ball carriers on his way to another dominant performance.
The Woodshed Award
hard hitter
Darren Bates changed the game in a big way Saturday by dropping a bomb of a tackle on South Carolina’s scrambling quarterback. Bates’ hit caused a fumble and sent Garcia to the bench dented and dazed as Auburn took the lead and didn’t look back.
Coach ‘em Up
coach award
Tracy Rocker has done an amazing job improving the defensive line play from last season to this season. Rocker masterfully rotated in his new talent with his veteran defenders through the slugfest of an SEC game. The line’s play has gotten stronger each week and they have maintained a focus on stopping the run and relentlessly pressuring quarterbacks into making game changing mistakes.
Hometown Hero
leadership
Josh Bynes is a priceless cog in the Auburn defense. Bynes has a phenomenal awareness while adjusting the defense pre-snap and an unrivaled intensity while pursuing the football. Bynes’ hardnosed physical tackles were vital as the defense shut down South Carolina’s touted true freshman runningback, while his interception at the end of the game helped seal the victory.
Frequent Flyer
top receiver
Terrell Zachery has still got the lightning fast burst he displayed during last season’s breakthrough performance. Zachery continues to prove that any time he touches the football a big play might follow as he led the team with four catches for 49 yards averaging 12.3 yards per touch.
Seen It
great coverage
Neiko Thorpe played tough physical coverage all day while fighting against one of the tallest groups of receivers in the country. Thorpe continues to be a leader in a secondary that has fought tooth and nail for 60 minutes of every game to help achieve a 4-0 start with a 2-0 SEC record to start the season.
