Coach Gene Chizik has done a great job at maintaining the family feel among his team.
The Corner’s awards to outstanding players against Arkansas State last weekend:
Mr. Everything
versatile player
Mario Fannin, finally slated as the top tailback in the offense, led the Tiger’s receivers with four receptions for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Fannin carried the ball sparingly, but still managed to average 4.7 yards per touch on the ground and continued to show his versatility catching the ball.
Lean On Me
best blocking
AJ Greene made his first career start Saturday after securing his position in a long, hard fought battle for the vacant right tackle position. For his first start Greene had a solid performance against Arkansas State as a member of the offensive line that helped pave the way for 367 yards rushing as well as protecting long enough to allow 241 yards through the air.
Mr. Momentum
game changing play
Game changing is one way to describe what
Cameron Newton’s impact was on the Tiger’s season opener Saturday. Newton’s performance was nothing short of electric as he took the team on his back at times while storming down the field for 171 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while also passing for 186 yards and three touchdowns.
Show Stopper
defensive play
Antoine Carter showed an ability to disrupt the offensive plays, as well as being a nuisance to quarterbacks, Saturday. Knifing through the Arkansas State protection and playing part in five tackles for losses including two and a half backs.
The Woodshed Award
hard hitter
Zac Etheridge wasted little time in announcing his return to action in Jordan Hare Stadium. Etheridge made himself heard as he leveled wide receiver Dwayne Hampton short of the first down on a third down pass completion that sent the Arkansas St. offense back to the bench as cheers erupted. Etheridge played part in five tackles during his welcome back appearance.
Coach ‘em Up
coach award
Head Coach
Gene Chizik has managed the unthinkable by returning an entire coaching staff this season. The chemistry developing between the coaching staff has become contagious to the players, both current and future. Chizik has done a great job maintaining the family feel, values and relationship amongst his team while showing relentless work ethic and desire to get better every day.
Hometown Hero
leadership
Neil Caudle has shown the heart of a true champion this season. Caudle fought through injuries and adversity while never letting his love for Auburn or his passion for football dwindle. Tiger fans all got to smile as Caudle connected with a 42 yard pass to Darvin Adams Saturday.
Frequent Flyer
top receiver
Quindarius Carr carried the momentum from his A-Day MVP performance (152 yards 1 TD) into the season with a career best performance Saturday. Carr only caught two passes, but they were big ones, totaling 87 yards as well as scoring a touchdown while also returning punts.
Seen It
great coverage
Shake off the cobwebs, and kick off the dust,
Aairon Savage is back on the prowl. The six year senior has overcome the injuries that plagued him the past two years and reclaimed his starting position in the Tiger’s secondary. Savage tallied five and a half tackles during limited action and showed his experience sliding around blockers and chopping down Arkansas State receivers.
