Daren Bates wins our “Show Stopper” award this week for fighting hard throughout the defense’s poor performance in Athens Saturday.
The Corner’s awards to outstanding players against Georgia.
Mr. Everything (
versatile player) –
Phillip Lutzenkirchen again proved himself to be a constant threat to score on the Tigers’ lone scoring drive in the first quarter. Lutzenkirchen leads the team with six touchdowns and has displayed tremendous power creating running lanes with his blocks and feather soft hands catching the football, a very versatile threat.
Lean on Me (best blocking) – John Sullen played as well at his right guard position, but Sullen and his fellow linemen couldn’t find a way to answer the complex blitzes. The linemen still search for continuity after allowing five sacks in a lackluster showing, while the offense only rushed for 87 yards in the game.
Mr. Momentum (
game changing play) –
CJ Uzomah shook off his previous season struggles, throwing the football on Coach Malzahn’s gadget play attempts. Uzomah was able to add his name to this long list of Auburn players who have thrown a touchdown to Lutzenkirchen for the lone score of the game.
Show Stopper (
defensive play) –
Daren Bates fought hard throughout the defense’s poor performance Saturday in Athens. The converted safety to linebacker showed flashes of his quick burst and pad cracking hits that earned him a start in every game of his first season in Auburn. Bates led the defense with eight solo tackles, four assists and a sack. The defense gets a needed chance to improve against in state Samford at Jordan-Hare next weekend.
The Woodshed Award (
hard hitter) –
Eltoro Freeman continued to shine through a long, dark game between the hedges for the Tigers’ defense. Freeman plays with a relentless desire to fight to the football and shut down his opponents. Freeman recorded eight tackles, while forcing another fumble, as he finishes his last season with the Tigers.
Coach ‘em Up (
coach award) –
Jay Boulware has seen his special teams shine all season, playing a major role in the Tigers’ victories and keeping many of the defeats close. Boulware’s tight ends are playing top notch. One leads the team in touchdown catches and another just threw his first touchdown. The special teams unit has seen Steven Clark consistently execute distance and accurate punts. Cody Parkey is among the best kickoff and field goal kickers in the country, and Boulware is still an amazing 4/4 for onside kick recoveries during his tenure at Auburn.
Hometown Hero (
leadership) –
Clint Moseley displayed a lot of fight in a forgettable overall showing against a solid Bulldog defense. Moseley withstood five sacks and countless hits as the offense could not find a way to effectively move the football and the protection struggled mightily. Moseley still threw for 140 yards on 22 attempts, with one interception, and showed great hand skills with some play fakes in another learning experience for the young offense.
Frequent Flyer - (
top receiver) –
Emory Blake has been a reliable target for whichever quarterback is taking the snaps this season, as he was one of the lone reliable targets for the offense against a stiff Bulldog defensive performance. Blake caught six passes for 101 yards to push himself over 500 yards for the season as he continues to grow into one of the top receivers in the country.
Seen It (
great coverage) – In a game that saw the Georgia offense take off like a rocket and never look back, many younger Tigers were able to see the field and experience the South’s oldest rivalry.
Enrique Florence continues to evolve into a strong threat for a starting spot in the secondary next season by displaying his natural ball sense and physical talents. Florence contributed three tackles while showing tremendous acceleration to close on his targets and deliver powerful tackles.
