Brad Lester gains yards during the Auburn-Mississippi State game. The offense will have trouble moving the ball this weekend.

To quote myself, “If Auburn’s defense plays the rest of the season like it has in the first two games, there’s a very good chance the Tigers will win a championship.”

Now I’m no soothe-sayer or psychic or anything of that nature, but there’s no truer statement than that after Saturday’s 3-2 win against Mississippi State. To say that the defense played lights out would be the understatement of the year. Now I’m amending my statement and saying that if the defense plays like they’ve played the last three games ...  you get the picture.

On the flipside, if Auburn’s offense continues to play the way that is has, there will be no championship for the Tigers this year. In a game where the defense dominated, the offense could only muster a field goal.

“It was ugly,” Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville said after the game. “We got in a situation where we thought we could win it on defense.”

Fortunately, the defense did win the game, but moving forward, the offense will need to produce more points to be SEC West Rivals LSU this week.

The number seven ranked Tigers of LSU are coming to Jordan-Hare off of two blow-out wins over less than stellar competition. But that doesn’t mean anything when it comes to play Auburn. The last eight games in this series have been decided by less than a touchdown, so don’t expect this year to be any different.

With Auburn’s offense faltering and LSU starting a new, untested quarterback, expect for both defenses to pin their ears back and get after the offense. And expect both offenses to have trouble moving the ball because of the pressure from the defense.

Because of home field advantage and a defense that’s playing lights out, I give Auburn the edge in another defensive struggle.

Prediction: Auburn 13, LSU 10
