Gene Chizik and the Tigers appear headed for a Chick-fil-A Bowl matchup with Virginia Tech.
Auburn's last, best hope at getting bumped up in the bowl selection process went out the window Saturday, right about the time LSU's Tyrann Mathieu broke his 18th tackle on a punt return against Georgia.
With LSU's 42-10 win over Georgia in the SEC Championship, it pretty much confirms what most Auburn fans have had a gut feeling about for awhile now: Auburn -- barring some truly odd selection day machinations --is heading to the Georgia Dome for the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31.
There was the possibility -- if Georgia won and LSU and Alabama stayed Nos. 1 and 2 in some combination -- that Auburn could have moved up to the Cotton or Outback bowls with three SEC teams in the BCS.
But don't fear, Auburn fans. The Tigers have won the last three they've played in the Georgia Dome: a 38-28 win over Tennessee in the 2004 SEC Championship, a 23-20 overtime win over Clemson in the 2007 Chick-fil-A Bowl and a 56-17 win over South Carolina in the 2010 SEC Championship.
Now, the question is, who is Auburn playing in the Chick-fil-A Bowl?
Well, Clemson made the answer to that very easy.
With their 38-10 win over Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship game, the Tigers (10-3) punched their ticket to the Orange Bowl.
The Chick-fil-A Bowl gets second shot at ACC teams, and pretty much has to take Virginia Tech (11-2).
The last time Auburn and Virginia Tech squared off? The Sugar Bowl on Jan. 3, 2005, when the Tigers finished off their perfect season with a 16-13 win.
There's still a slim possibility that Virginia Tech -- depending on how far down the polls it slides -- can be chosen as a BCS at-large team.
Chances are slim, but we're covering all our bases here.
If that is the case, if the Hokies are plucked up as an at-large team, the cream of the crop for Chick-fil-A to choose from would be Florida State (8-4), Virginia (8-4) or Georgia Tech (8-4), though North Carolina State (7-5) and North Carolina (7-5) can also come into play.
Looks like Tigers-Hokies has the best chance of happening, though.
Here's a bowl-by-bowl rundown of the SEC bowl-eligible teams and where they're probably headed.
BCS National Championship Game : LSU (13-0) vs. Alabama (11-1)...although the pasting Oklahoma State gave Oklahoma could give voters something to think about. There is a chance the Cowboys could jump to No. 2 and send the Crimson Tide to the Sugar Bowl.
Capital One Bowl : South Carolina (10-2); could opt for Arkansas or Georgia, but usually skews toward the East and SC's got the head-to-head win over Georgia.
Cotton Bowl : Arkansas (10-2); usually skews toward the West.
Outback Bowl : Georgia (10-3); though you could be looking at South Carolina if Cap One opts for the Bulldogs.
Chick-fil-A Bowl : Auburn (7-5); Let's let bowl president and CEO Gary Stokan tell you why this is happening: "(Auburn has) been a first-class organization to work with. In relationship to Georgia and the Chick-fil-A Bowl, their fans have obviously been very passionate in supporting and following the Tigers to the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Auburn would be a welcome addition to the 44th Chick-fil-A Bowl."
Gator Bowl : Florida (6-6); what its heart desires.
Liberty Bowl : Mississippi State (6-6); though it could be Vanderbilt.
Music City Bowl : Vanderbilt (6-6); though it could be Mississippi State.
