Auburn holds its own ‘American Idol’ competition

Open auditions for “Auburn Idol” will be held at the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center this Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

The Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center and Mix96.7 have teamed up to make one of America’s favorite singing competitions, “American Idol,” local. The “Auburn Idol” competition will be begin this Saturday, Nov. 14.

Ari Turnbull of the AUHC believes that hundreds will turn out for this all ages event.

“This is an event people can relate to and be excited about,” Turnbull said. “People who can’t go to the bars have something new to get excited about.”

Open auditions will be held at the hotel this Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Contestants must be 13 and older and after the masses have belted out their songs, the top 25 contestants will move on to four more rounds of competition with eliminations each week.

The compititon will lead up to Dec. 18th when the winner will be chosen. The “Auburn Idol” will receive $10,000, an opportunity to record a song for radio play and the chance to sing the National Anthem at an Auburn sporting event.

To check out auditions, tickets will be sold for $5 at the AUHC. There will be a cash bar and sode bar will be available in the newly renovated ballroom.

“We are so excited to partner with MIX 96.7 FM to host the first-ever ‘Auburn Idol,’ giving the area’s talent an opportunity to showcase their skills,” Turnbull said. “We hope that ‘Auburn Idol’ will become a tradition for years to come and enable great singers to jump-start their careers. The elimination rounds will take place in our newly renovated auditorium, which features a new sound and lighting system that will give each performance the feel of a concert.”
