Creede Simpson runs to third base in Auburn’s 4-3 loss to Missouri in Game 2 of a doubleheader Sunday
The Auburn Tigers lost both games in a doubleheader vs the Missouri Tigers. With Saturday’s game postponed due to rain, Auburn played two games on Sunday against Missouri to complete the three game series.
Auburn lost the first outing 6-4. Junior pitcher Slade Smith took the loss, allowing nine hits, five runs and striking out three in 4 2/3 innings.
Missouri left fielder Dane Opel went three for four at the plate, with two home runs and 4 RBIs on the day.
After falling down 4-0 at the top of the third inning, the Tigers battled back to make the score as close as 4-3 after the fourth. Missouri stretched the lead to 6-3 after the top of the ninth, and Auburn added a run in the final inning.
Auburn had five hitters with multiple hits on the day, but left 16 runners on base.
Missouri’s Jeff Emens tallied the win. Emens allowed seven hits, no earned runs and struck out two in 3 2/3 innings.
Jake Walsh earned the save for Missouri. Walsh had one strikeout and allowed no earned runs in one inning.
In game two, the Tigers let a 3-1 seventh inning lead slip away, allowing Missouri to score three runs in the inning. Missouri went on to win 4-3. The game was called after seven innings to comply with Missouri’s travel plans.
“We did some things in that inning that aren't going to help you win a ball game," Auburn head coach John Pawlowski said. "You walk four guys and you make a mistake defensively; when it's a close game like this where one run, one pitch or one play could mean the difference, we certainly came up on the short end."
Freshman Daniel Koger had a strong outing in his first crack at collegiate play. Koger allowed five hits, walked three, allowed no earned runs and struck out five in five innings.
Senior right hander Zach Blatt took the loss, allowing two earned runs and walking one in less than one inning of play.
Dusty Ross got the win for Missouri. Ross allowed two hits, no earned runs and had no walks in 1 2/3 innings.
Jake Walsh earned his second save of the day, allowing just one hit in 2/3 innings.
The losses drop Auburn to 1-2 on the season after winning the season opener against Missouri on Friday.
Auburn takes the diamond again Tuesday Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. for the first game of two against Alcorn State.
