Check out Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at Bourbon Street on Saturday, Aug. 13.
If you’ve been around Alabama music long enough, you’re bound to have crossed paths with the talented 32-year-old Florence native Jason Isbell and his rock-steady 400 Unit. As a group of Alabama musicians, they constantly outshine the competition with their national presence and throwback Southern sound, all while remaining true to their roots.
Proudly hailing from the Muscle Shoals region of Alabama, where the group still hangs their hats, Isbell made some of his first recordings at the legendary FAME studios. And with his background with the Drive-By Truckers, a group he was a member of till 2007, he is certainly Alabama rock royalty.
After his amicable departure from the Truckers in 2007, Isbell released his first solo CD, “Sirens of the Ditch” to much fanfare. The album was a departure from much of the Trucker’s material and Isbell hit the road with a group of Florence musicians, dubbed the 400 Unit, after the psychiatric ward of a local hospital.
In 2009, Isbell and the 400 Unit released their eponymous first album and, much like the Truckers, have been touring steadily since. In April, the group released “Here We Rest,” a 40 minute tour-de-force that mixes heart-tugging ballads with loud electric rockers. The album, which topped many national “best of” lists, pays homage to the Muscle Shoals sound that poured out of the region during the heyday of rock n’ roll.
Certainly not a show to be missed, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit will be playing Bourbon Street on Saturday, Aug.13. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 the day of the show. Stop by
