Southern Culture on the Skids has outdoes itself once again with its new album “Zombified.”

Chapel Hill, NC's own Southern Culture on the Skids has been gracing stages in the Auburn area since the early '90s, their shows at Darnell's and Lil' Ireland's still considered legendary. Most recently, the band has played at Standard Deluxe in Waverly and headlined the Alex City Jazz Fest in 2010, delighting the crowd with their self-described “toe sucking geek rock—kinda weird but it feels good when you're doing it,” handing out fried chicken to the gyrating crowd of all ages.

Now, SCOTS outdoes itself once again with its new album, “Zombified,” available on CD, digital download, and on blood-red vinyl LP. The album, a tribute to the horror and exploitation movies that were popular in drive-ins and movie theaters in the '60s and '70s, was originally released as an 8-song EP in Australia back in 1998, and now finally available in the USA with the addition of five new songs.

Featuring tunes such as “Undertaker,” “Swamp Thang,” “Bloodsucker,” “Devil's Stomping Ground,” “Bat's Are Sleeping,” “The Creeper,” “Eyeball You Later,” “Torture,” “Idol With the Glowin' Eyes,” and the title cut, they even tackle Creedence Clearwater Revival's “Sinister Purpose” with aplomb. Complete with sound effects like creaking doors, screaming women, violent thunderstorms, bubbling cauldrons, laughing witches and more, “Zombified” is quite possibly the greatest creepy album ever. But beyond that, it is a masterpiece of ghoulish kitsch, and yet another fabulous collection of SCOTS being the delightfully goofy musicians they are.

But don't let that goofiness fool you, these guys have chops that will make your eyeballs pop out of your head. Their unique combination of surf punk, hillbilly rock, and country twang makes for fine listening any time of year.
