Owen gives a convincing performance at a tough, resourceful agent in “The International.”
Clive Owen and Naomi Watts star in the action-packed thriller “The International,” released on DVD June 9. The film is equipped with so many twists and turns it will even make viewers with fresh manicures bite their nails.
The film circles around two agents, Louis Salinger (Owen) and Eleanor Whitman(Watts), fighting against a conspiracy in one of the world’s most powerful banks, IBBC. It is a conspiracy that kills anyone who comes close to discovering the truth. Salinger and Whitman are determined to bring the villainous bank to justice.
Salinger and Whitman begin their journey after the murder of Salinger’s colleague, Thomas Schumer (Ian Burfield), in the first five minutes of the film. The murder thrusts the two agents into an intense chase, battling assassins, dirty agents, protocol and jurisdiction restrictions and the clock. They soon discover IBBC is involved in a scandal to gain control of Chinese missiles, which supply 99 percent of the small weapons used in the world’s conflicts. But mysteriously enough, every insider Salinger and Whitman talk to soon die in a freak accident. There is continuously a new twist, a new discovery, or a new murder.
Owen gives a convincing performance as tough, resourceful agent dedicated to achieving justice. As a man, he is slightly broken from a break down he had two years ago after the dismissal of his case against IBBC and the murder of his key witness.
With the frequent scene jumping and a lot of financial jargon, “The International” is a bit confusing and hard to follow at times, but it is never boring. Because of the complexity of the plot, viewers need to pay constant close attention in order to comprehend the events of the film. The gun fights and high speed chases combined with haunting background music will keep the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the entire movie.
