Any girl who has ever charged an outfit she can’t afford will enjoy “Confessions of a Shopaholic.”
For any girl who has ever bought a new pair of shoes instead of dinner, or has ever nick-named a credit card, “Confessions of a Shopaholic” will be as addictive as chocolate, or colorful handbags.
Isla Fisher shines as the delightfully goofy Rebecca “Becks” Bloomwood, a journalist addicted to shoes, shawls and Chanel. After the magazine she writes for goes bankrupt, she finds herself in a financial crisis. In order to pay off her $16,000 credit card debt, she ironically takes a job writing for a money saving magazine. Although Rebecca only accepts the gig until she can land her dream job as a writer for Alette Magazine, she inadvertently saves the struggling financial magazine with her unique and innovative writing style. Because extreme debt is no stranger to Rebecca, she is able to relate to her readers, thus stretching the demographic and spicing up the articles.
The film consists of Rebecca desperately attempting to kick her over-indulgent shopping habit, while being haunted by store window mannequins and sample sales. She also has her hands full trying to win the heart of her boss, Luke (Hugh Dancy), one-up her glamorous rival, Alicia (Leslie Bibb), and avoid the evil debt collector, Derek Smeath (Robert Stanton).
John Goodman and Joan Cusack co-star as Rebecca’s papa bear father and mother, who save as much as Rebecca spends. The hilarious Wendie Malick also co-stars as the whip-cracking leader of Rebecca’s Shopaholic Anonymous group.
The film is a tad corny, with silly scenes such as Rebecca melting a giant ice block to get her hands on a hidden credit card or mannequins coming to life to applaud her willpower. However, Fisher lights up the screen as the clumsy yet charming Rebecca, making the film refreshing and entertaining. Any girl that has ever charged a fabulous outfit she can’t afford will love “Confessions of a Shopaholic.”
