Spoonful James has a long history of making great music, and the Auburn band has done it again with their new album, “Are You Listening?”

The band has been an Auburn mainstay for over a decade, playing all the good clubs in town and traveling all over the southeast with their brand of blues-based roots rock.

Wynn Christian, Quinn Borland, and Patrick Lunceford are the creative core behind the music, and despite years of bar gigs and many ups and downs, continue to create great music together.

“Are You Listening?” opens with a rollicking version of the Rufus Thomas classic “Memphis Train” that sets the stage in grand fashion for what’s to come. The band shows their country influences in the next tune “Why Don’t We (Just Go Home),” and then kicks into a sweet country-blues shuffle on “Makes No Sense.” “Broke In Alabama” is a tune to which we can all relate in one sense or another, and then the boys bring out the blues in full force on “You’re All I’ve Got To My Name.”

This is followed by a tune by another great Auburn songwriter and performer, Tony Brook. “Atchafalaya” is a song released initially on the Tony Brook Band’s "”Cross and Chain” album and also covered by Lisa Baldwin and Dave Haney on their excellent album “Where We Belong,” but Spoonful’s version may be the sweetest recorded version yet.

The band continues to rock with “Come and Get It,” followed by a medium tempo ballad called “Light On.” “Try” kicks it up a notch with an infectious funky groove, and then “Dog Days” knocks it home with an inspirational gospel blues tune that leads to the album’s closer, the Sonny Boy Williamson classic “Eyesight To The Blind.”

Spoonful James is a band that has deserved more attention than they have received over the years, punctuated by the title “Are You Listening?” We are, guys, and folks, if you aren’t already, you should be! Pick it up at The Guitar Shoppe locally, or on CDBaby.com and you’ll be listening for many years to come.
