The fifth album from this surf-minded, guitar-strumming singer-songwriter, is what you’d expect from this easygoing, insta-friend. His rhythms are familiar, and the melodies — well, you seem to already know them even if you’ve never heard them before. Perhaps that’s where the genius is - Johnson’s songs are so accessible. His grooves are upbeat, his tunes are a fun ride. Johnson’s “To the Sea” is predictable. But there’s no reason to say that like it’s a bad word. Predictable is also the rhythm of a perfect set of waves rolling in from the horizon. And that’s a sight that brings joy to the soul. Nothing wrong with that.
