“Hell Bound Train” takes you on a heavenly trip through the blues.
Atlanta’s Delta Moon is a band that has undergone many changes over the years. They made their debut album back in 2003 with Gina Leigh sharing the lead vocals with Tom Gray, who, along with Mark Johnson, is the core of this great blues band.
Gray has a long history in Atlanta, leading the seminal punk rock band The Brains and later, playing in the quirky new-wave band Swimming Pool Q’s, also has had his songs recorded by the likes of Cyndi Lauper, Manfred Mann, Carlene Carter and Bonnie Bramlett, among others.
He started out as a keyboard player, but picked up his first lap steel guitar in the late ‘80s and still hasn’t put it down. He and Johnson met at an Atlanta music shop and have been picking together ever since. The newly-formed band put out a trio of albums with Leigh, then had another female lead singer for an album, and finally settled on a four-piece structure with Gray singing lead on their last album, “Clear Blue Flame.”
Along with Gray and Johnson, Franher Joseph plays bass and Darren Stanley plays drums on Delta Moon’s latest opus, “Hell Bound Train,” another fantastic foray into the world of Delta blues. Gray’s lap steel prowess has become remarkable over the last decade, and when they are intertwined with Johnson’s guitar stylings the band becomes something truly unique and significant.
“Hell Bound Train” is made up of 10 originals and a great cover of Mississippi Fred MacDowell’s classic “You Got To Move,” best known from the Stones’ classic “Sticky Fingers” album, and DM’s version takes it to a new level. The title cut states “You can’t get to heaven/on a hell-bound train,” but I would take exception to that-this “Hell Bound Train” takes you on a heavenly trip through the blues.
