Sam Lamont’s new album, “Promenade,” has a unique and satisfying groove.
Sam Lamont was born in Philadelphia, raised in southern New Jersey, and now calls Morgantown, West Virginia home. This talented singer/songwriter entered the music scene back in 2008 with his self-titled debut album, followed it up in 2009 with a very strong sophomore effort titled “Good Intentions,” and solidifies his status as an artist with whom to be reckoned with his third outing, “Promenade.”
Lamont makes solid roots/rock 'n' soul music, combining blues, jazz, funk, folk, country and rock in catchy melodies, memorable harmonies, and meaningful lyrics.
The very first song on the album proclaims with a hooky tune that despite polluted streams, dirty old taxis, forgotten dreams, burned out meadows or one-star hotels, “I'll Be Waiting for You.” Lamont weaves his way through sweet ballads (“Nothing At All,” “Send Me Back to My Home”) and blistering rockers (“So Much Clearer”), but what he really excels in is his sense of groove. All the songs on “Promenade” have a unique and satisfying groove that have a way of drawing the listener into the mood of the song.
“Kissing Babies” opens with a group of handclappers clapping in counterpoint which segues into a country-laced rocker bound to inspire a rash of foot-tapping and boot-stomping. In these days of pigeon-holing everyone's music into a specific genre, Sam Lamont's music defies categorization.
