‘Get Smart,‘ a smart choice
Noah Mason For The Corner News published November 14, 2008 Photo by movies.yahoo.comStarring Anne Hathaway and Steve Carell, “Get Smart” is a fun comedy to rent. America’s favorite office manager, Steve Carell, along with Peter Segal, (“The Longest Yard,” “Anger Management”) team up in “Get Smart” for a new-to-DVD comedy that supersedes expectations. Many moviegoers may have expected to see Steve Carell reprising his role as an incompetent dunce in cinematic form, but there is much more to this film. “Get Smart” is derived from a popular ‘60s television series of the same name that parodied the popular secret agent genre. Carell and co-star Anne Hathaway (“The Devil Wears Prada”) reprise the roles of Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 in the action-packed comedy. The movie derives much of its humor from a clever script and Smart’s silly mishaps as a spy. Laser security systems and tech savvy sidekicks complete the secret agent theme. Smart is not an altogether incapable spy as he clumsily navigates disarming bad guys and jumps from rooftops. His unrequited affection for Agent 99 adds to the comic appeal of the film. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson chips in as Agent 23 and Smarts’s chief rival in the agency as he competes with Smart for prestige and for the love of Agent 99. The movie is altogether, funny, crafty and action-packed as the characters give a comedic interpretation of the secret agent clichés. “Get Smart” is a smart choice to rent as it packs both action, stunts and laughs.
