If you’ve gotten used to the lightening-fast delivery and razor sharp commentary on NBC’s “30 Rock,” you may not want to get your hopes up for “Baby Mama.”

Fans of Tina Fey come in all shapes and sizes. First you have your “Saturday Night Live” fans, who are used to Fey’s slightly more acerbic wit shining through. Then there are “Mean Girls” devotees, fans of the 2004 Lindsay Lohan teen blockbuster, written by and co-starring Fey.  Then there are “30 Rock fans,” like myself.

If you’ve gotten used to the lightening-fast delivery and razor sharp commentary on NBC’s “30 Rock,” you may not want to get your hopes up for “Baby Mama.” The comedy stars Fey and Amy Poehler and is the story about a 30-something executive who arrives at the sudden conclusion that she must produce offspring and decides to hire a less-than-perfect surrogate to do the dirty work.

It seems to be little more than your average, run of the mill, cameo comedy-in that everyone and their mother has a brief but important role. Steve Martin brings some unexpected zest to his scenes (who knew Steve Martin was still funny?), but other than that, this seems to be the case of two very talented comedic actresses cashing a paycheck.

While the parts may have a certain worth by themselves, there seems to be a general lack of cohesion to the movie as a whole. It’s never exactly explaines why Fey’s character feels this sudden need to have a child - and while this is completely appropriate in other comedic formats, we’ve come to expect more out of Fey.

The dialogue on “30 Rock” doesn’t waste a second to make a joke, and if “Mean Girls” weren’t so good, then one could maybe explain it away as a problem of format; there’s less time to tell jokes on TV, so the time is used more wisely.  However, this flick just doesn’t live up to the reputation Fey and Poehler (whose hilarious work on “SNL” and the much lauded “Upright Citizens Brigade” should not be ignored in the light of Fey’s superstardom) have built for themselves.
