Fall in love with ‘Cholera’
Charlie Joseph For The Corner News published March 26, 2008
“Love in the Time of Cholera” is a love story worth watching. The movie nominated for a Golden Globe award is now available on DVD. The question the movie asks is “How long would you wait for love?” From the same director that brought us “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” in 2005 comes Mike Newell’s “Love in the Time of Cholera,” which was just released on DVD. The movie is based on the book by Gabriel Macia Marquez which was published in Spanish back in 2007. With light nudity and some fairly burlesque scenes, the movie is filled with irony, pathos and a message of respect for love. Oscar winner Javier Bardem displays a believable and lovesick character who devotes his entire adult life to the love of a woman whose father has already determined her future plans for marriage. At times Bardem comes off a little strong and the illusion is broken, but overall he does an excellent job of making such a strange story moving and provocative. The movie’s appropriateness jabs hard at the fast pace of today’s relationships and portrays another side of love that is worth viewing at least once. |
