Don’t waste your time on this ‘Promotion’
Michael Jones For The Corner News published September 11, 2008 Photo by movies.yahoo.comNo wonder “The Promotion” went straight to DVD. “The Promotion” - a film recently released on DVD starring Seann William Scott and John C. Reilly - is a comedy about two assistant managers of a local grocery store and their competition for a new job opening. Scott plays a young, ambitious manager who suspects an easy promotion until the older, more experienced Richard Welhner (Reilly) enters the picture. Although there are some funny scenes in the film, overall it provides a considerable amount of awkwardness. The plot is odd for a basic comedy and Reilly’s character has some strange scenes that didn’t seem to supply any comedy nor add anything to the storyline - like his late-night tap dancing in the store’s frozen section. Also, Seann William Scott’s dialogue throughout the movie is a bit quirky sounding. But other than being a little strange, “The Promotion” does have some humor in it. Reilly’s character has some humorous slip-ups and misunderstandings - presumably due to the fact that he is Canadian. Also, some of Reilly’s and Scott’s coworkers have limited, but funny roles in the movie. As a whole, movies like this make you question how some Hollywood execs keep their jobs. And it was as if the writers decided they could not allow the movie to be like everyone expected - a mindless film with an emphasis on the comedy and nothing but an afterthought afforded to the plot. After all, Seann William Scott is the star of the movie. Without any expectations, “The Promotion” can still be enjoyed. However, you might be better off just watching the two or three minute trailer. |
