A new iPhone 4 is about to debut and no, its not for AT&T. Verizon will carry for the first time ever the Apple iPhone. The iPhone 4 is available for preorder to Verizon customers on Feb. 3 and available to pick up or purchase on Feb. 11.
AT&T has been carrying the iPhone exclusively for a little more than four years now. This could make a big change in the market.
Both companies carry the iPhone 4, and Android phones. AT&T carries only a limited amount of Android phones, and does not have the Droid X.
Apple tends to release a new iPhone every summer like clockwork. There is speculation that the iPhone 5 will not be available to Verizon customers until next year, and that only AT&T will get the new phone this summer. Also with the current change Apple has not said anything about the iPhone 5 release, and they may hold back from releasing it until later.
Some things to think about if considering switching to Verizon for the iPhone 4 are that they have not figured out all the issues with the iPhone on their network yet. AT&T had the same problem when they first debuted the phone.
The iPhone for Verizon is not capable of running the Internet while in a telephone call. Also FaceTime has not been completely configured for the Verizon network. FaceTime is a part of Apple’s software that allows you to videoconference with another iPhone through WiFi. Both of these features are available on AT&T’s iPhone.
While both phones are very similar, there are definitely a variety of things that Verizon will have to figure out rather quickly to persuade more customers to consider switching networks.
The iPhone 4 is essentially the same exact phone on both networks but there are minor differences.
Another issue Verizon could face is that many people already love their Droid phones. The Droid X has more storage than the iPhone 4. For many people who use their smart phones to store their data and music, this could be a breaking factor for them. The Droid X offers space for a SD card to add up to 40 GB of storage and the new iPhone is only available in 16 and 32 GB.
“ I would not consider purchasing an iPhone on Verizon anytime soon. Another reason I want to keep my Droid over the iPhone is because of my keyboard. It makes texting end emailing a lot easier and the iPhone wont offer a keyboard coming with their phone.” Said Auburn University senior, Lindsey Rodgers.
For many AT&T users, they are already bound into a contract and it will be very costly to break the contact and sign up for a new plan on Verizon. This may slow down the switch between the companies for quite sometime.
