The Students for McCain Coalition is part of John McCain’s national presidential campaign. The coalition is made up of students who support the campaign and is located throughout the United States. Elizabeth Mahaney is the campus outreach coordinator for the coalition on Auburn’s campus.

“We are a division of Students for McCain,” Mahaney said. “Every single college in the state of Alabama has a Students for McCain chapter.”

At each school, the coalition helps promote the McCain campaign through voter registration drives and other sponsored events. At Auburn, the coalition held a debate watch party on Friday night at Skybar Café. The organization rented out a portion of the establishment to watch the debate on big screen TVs.

The coalition also had a tailgate for the Auburn vs. Tennessee football game on Saturday to promote the campaign. The Students for McCain chapter from the University of Tennessee was invited to visit the tailgate, and the coalition sold koozies and stickers to spread support for McCain.

“We have koozies to be sold that say ‘War Damn McCain,’” Mahaney said.

Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, the coalition will hold a meeting in the Lowder Business Building, Room 113A for McCain supporters who wish to attend. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

While the students are advocates for the McCain campaign, a main goal for the Students for McCain is to promote voter registration. The coalition has voter registration tables set up on the Thatch and Haley concourses. In the future, the coalition hopes to have tables on the Roosevelt concourse and by Lowder Business Building.

“We are promoting voter registration drives non-stop until the very last day, which is Oct. 24, to register to vote,” Mahaney said.

Students can also register to vote at the Lee County GOP Headquarters, located at the corner of Glenn Avenue and College Street. A goal of the coalition is not to force the McCain campaign on other students, but to promote the campaign and raise awareness on the importance of voting on Nov. 4, 2008.

“Everyone should be able to vote,” Mahaney said. “It’s your natural right given to you when you are born if you are a U.S. citizen. That’s the only way you’re going to have change is if you get out and go vote.”

William Wallace sponsors the coalition on Auburn’s campus, and he serves as the campus director. Drew White is the Southeast student coordinator for the McCain campaign. The organization will be on campus until November. For more information on the Students for McCain Coalition in Auburn or upcoming events, visit the group site on Facebook.
