The Auburn University softball team has swung into their 2009 spring season. This year, the team has a new assistant coach, Steve Johnson. Johnson, who coached at University of North Carolina at Pembroke for six years, will be joining head coach, Tina Deese, and assistant coach, Mark Ryal.

The Tigers have been off to a good start with an overall record of 14-2.

With only three seniors on the roster, the team consists mostly of freshman and sophomores. This week, team member Anna Thompson was named SEC softball pitcher of the week. At the War Eagle Classic tournament Feb. 20, 2009, Thompson set the school record by pitching 18 strikeouts. The junior from Huntsville, Ala., has been pitching well all season.

“I love going to the games,” says Anna Lasseter, a junior at Auburn. “They are exciting and fun to watch. Last weekend, I helped work at the tournament and had such a fun couple days. Even if you aren’t a fan of softball, come out and support the girls. They work so hard.” Lasseter volunteers at the games by assisting the officials.

Tuesday the Tigers will play Mercer at home. Coverage of the game can be heard on WZMG 910 AM.

Games are held at the Jane B. Moore Field located next to the intramural fields on Biggio Drive. For more information, visit their official website http://auburntigers.cstv.com/sports/w-softbl/aub-w-softbl-body.html.
