The PINK line from Victoria’s Secret is teaming up with colleges across the country to generate one of the nation’s largest clothing drives. PINK is urging people to donate their old clothing to domestic violence shelters in the United States. They have set up their drives on college campuses to help promote PINK’s new collegiate line.
“The main thing right now is the collegiate line, so Victoria’s Secret is really trying to plug into universities and get involved,” Jenna Nash, a Victoria’s Secret intern and sophomore at Auburn, said.
Auburn University is one of several colleges represented in the collegiate line from PINK. Thursday, Oct. 23, PINK set up a small store on Auburn’s campus to promote the collegiate line and the domestic violence campaign.
“We have a big pop-up shop and we are promoting the new Victoria’s Secret collegiate wear,” Nash said. “So, we have Victoria’s Secret clothes with Auburn on it. We’re also doing a project called ‘Recycle Your Sweats.’ So, people can come and donate their old clothes, or shoes, or anything.”
Representatives from the store were urging students to bring their old sweats, or any other clothing, to put into the bins on campus. The clothes are taken to the Domestic Violence Intervention Center in Opelika.
To increase support for the campaign, PINK has created a competition among the colleges represented in the collegiate line to see which college donates the most clothing. There are 15 colleges in the competition, including Auburn and the University of Alabama, and it lasts through Dec. 10, 2008.
“We really want Auburn to win, so we’re trying to get as many donations as we can,” Nash said.
Nash and Heather Hall, another Victoria’s Secret intern and sophomore at Auburn, are also focused on involving the community with the clothing drive.
“There is a big steel bin located on the front patio of Tiger Rags on Magnolia Ave.,” Hall said. “It’s going to be there through Dec. 10. Anyone, we’re trying to get the community involved, campus, everybody, and come donate men’s, women’s, children’s clothing, shoes, anything.”
PINK is also maintaining count of the donations. The Web site for Victoria’s Secret is keeping track of the donations with a scoreboard for the leaders. Currently, Auburn is third in the competition, trailing the University of Oklahoma and Texas A&M.
Nash and Hall encourage students at Auburn and members of the community to donate old clothing to the Domestic Violence Intervention Center. For more information on the campaign, or to look at the standings in the competition, visit
