Audrey Moore has been competing in pageants since she was 16 years old. While in high school, she won “Miss Spain Park” and “Miss Birmingham Teen.” She has recently won the title of “Miss Alabama” USA 2010.
Moore is a sophomore at Auburn University, majoring in communication disorders. Last fall, she was nominated by her sorority, PI Beta Phi, to be in the “Miss Greek Week” pageant where she won the title and “Miss Congeniality.” She then participated in the “Miss Glomerata” pageant which she also won.
These pageants gave her confidence to compete in the “Miss Alabama” pageant. The pageant was held on Oct.31 in Birmingham. Thirty girls competed in the pageant. Moore’s most memorable moment was winning “Miss Congeniality” because she said a lot of girls go into the competition very competitive and won’t even talk to other competitors.
“It doesn’t make sense to me because the judges can’t even see the girls’ interactions back stage and why the girls wouldn’t want to enjoy meeting each other,” Moore said. “It just meant a lot to me that I stood out and I could make a positive impact.”
Moore participated in the pageant last year and placed in the top ten. One of her mother’s friends suggested that she try out. She decided to participate, but was uneasy about the competition, especially the swim suit section. After the competition, she realized she was tired of being scared and was ready to win.
“One thing that I have learned from this experience is to be confident,” Moore said. “Last year I went into the competition timid and this year I entered with a mindset to win. I really think that is the key to success to be confident with yourself and I think you will succeed.”
According to Moore, the only downside she has found in participating in pageants is that she has gotten something stolen at every pageant. Moore has had items, such as shoes, disappear right before she went on stage. She has already planned to lock up her belongings at “Miss USA,” considering the tension between girls will probably increase.
The “Miss USA” pageant is April 18, 2010, in Las Vegas. Moore will spend three weeks preparing for the pageant as well as bonding with the other contestants by going to photo shoots and a red carpet event.
“I was blessed enough to win this title and I’m really excited about competing in ‘Miss USA’ in April,” Moore said.
