The puns and jokes will be flying this Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Make Your Move Performing Arts Studio in Opelika. "What the Fox," a local improv comedy group, will be performing for the first time.
"What the Fox" was formed in the beginning of the summer of 2009 with three members. Through a Craig's List ad and word of mouth, the group grew slowly and now has eight members, all local comedians in the Auburn/Opelika area.
The idea behind 'What the Fox" came from Lindsay Acord. The Memphis, Tenn. native began her comedy career in 1998 after joining the improv group "Vertical Imbalance." Upon moving to the Auburn/Opelika area, Acord set out to create an improv group of her own.
“What the Fox” is the first improv comedy group in the Auburn/Opelika area. Half the group is inexperienced in improv comedy while the other half will be performing unplanned skits for the first time.
While there is a basic outline for the show, the members do not have scripts. All skits will be unplanned and spontaneous. The audience will provide the content of the skits. They will be given cards at the
beginning of the show to write sentences in which the comedians will have to incorporate into their act. To prove their true spontaneity, all practices are open to the public. Friends and fans come in with snacks, contribute ideas and join in on the laughs.
"I want the audience to get the full experience of contributing material to help them feel like they are running the show," said Acord.
The audience can expect to see skits anywhere from fairy unicorns cooking deadly beans to a member being interrogated for not changing dryer lint. The characteristics will be left up to the audience’s digression.
The first show will cost $1 and members encourage the audience to 'BYOC' - bring your own chair. Acord plans for the group to perform about once a month. Keeping in line with the group's spontaneity, the group's name came from a chance encounter. In the middle of the group discussing potential names, group member Jenn Johnson screamed "What the Fox" after seeing a fox dash across the road.
"After that we kept coming back to 'What the Fox'," said Acord.
After six months of planning and practicing, Acord and gang will show off their comedic skills this Sunday at 116 Columbus Parkway. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit the group's Facebook page.
