Ever since I saw the adorable previews for King Fu Panda I knew I had to see it. I have always been a sucker for cartoons and I love Jack Black (the main character’s voice) so I went to the theater to check it out. It has been the number one movie for the past few weeks and has grossed over $120 million since its opening on June 6, 2008.

The movie is loosely based on a popular Chinese video game that featured a ninja panda. Dreamworks, a division of Paramount Pictures, and their animators studied real king fu fighting techniques like in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon to use in the film. The animators did a great job; the martial arts looked very real (even though the characters were cartoon animals).
What I really liked about Kung Fu Panda was that the obvious target audience for the film was young children, but the movie was actually funny for the parents and big siblings who were taking those millions of children to the theater. The humor was smart and witty and kids and adults alike really enjoyed it. The cast was filled with big names like Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, and Jackie Chan.

I interviewed two little boys after the movie and they said that they really liked the movie and they would recommend their friends to go see it. An adult woman said that it had a great message and a heartfelt story that was inspiring. A teenage boy said that he was pleasantly surprised by how funny the film was.
I personally loved the movie. Po, the panda, is chosen by the elders’ prophecy that he will be the next “dragon master.” Although Po loves kung fu, he is a big clumsy panda and can’t convince himself that he is actually the one who can save the village from the evil enemy. Other fighters are faster and stronger and more agile, but Po ends up having the heart to really pull through and shine as the dragon master.
