When we arrive in Auburn for the first time, the decision to choose a major is set before us. Some students, prior to even moving into their dorm or apartment have already mapped out their respective career path. For some of us though it seems that choosing a major can be an extremely tough and frustrating situation. Questions like “What do I want to do with my life?” or “Is this major really for me?” continually enter our brains and ultimately it seems to lead to one big headache. Luckily, Auburn University has a service to students that can act as a potential remedy to this problem.

This remedy for the perplexed student is known as Career Development Services (CDS). Located on the third and fourth floors of Mary Martin Hall, this campus department is available in order to help students discover where their interests and goals lie. Through out the school year these services are readily and easily accessible to students.

In order to start using their services, the first easy step is to go online and peruse all of the many resources that are present on their website. Resources ranging from a free online resume builder to potential job search engines are there as helpful tools. After looking over the website you will find that there are links that read “assessments.” These assessments are the personality tests that rate your strengths and weaknesses toward a career path. With a total of five assessments, three of them are free, these well known tests such as the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory are ready for use, which both cost $15. After taking these personality tests online, you are able to schedule an appointment with CDS’ experienced career counselors.

Working full time, the team of career counselors at CDS are here to advise you free of charge. When meeting with these friendly people, they will analyze and go over your test results with you and show you where your strengths lie for which particular major you tested highest in. After your first meeting they file all of your results so when the next time you come back they can discuss more aspects of career development such as critiquing resumes or helping you find internships. If you are a freshman, counselors can even help you write up a four-year career plan to help you utilize class hours, potential internships, etc. Essentially, these more than helpful faculties can be your best friends when it comes to being prepared for the working world.

Aside from the beneficial advising, CDS also hosts a series of “special events” through out the school year. These events consist of the part-time job fair, career expo, hotel and restaurant management fair, internship and summer job fair, and various others.

In being a senior and changing my major a total of four times, this service would have been one of the best decisions I would have made in college. I highly encourage any freshman or sophomore to take full advantage of this service that is ready to serve you in a most beneficial way.
